Snap Perception: Taiwan’s army faces greater than a recruitment drawback

MELBOURNE: Taiwan’s choice on Tuesday (Dec 27) to increase its mandatory military service to one year, reversing a choice taken by its earlier authorities, is acknowledgement that the ramifications of what was a political choice are coming house to roost. 

Saying the choice, President Tsai Ing-wen acknowledged that “the present four-month army service will not be sufficient to satisfy the quick and ever-changing state of affairs” with China’s “intimidation and threats in opposition to Taiwan are getting extra apparent”.

Since then, Taiwan’s army has struggled to satisfy recruitment targets, with its armed forces having 162,000 troopers in its ranks as of June this 12 months – 7,000 in need of its goal. This has been blamed partially resulting from a declining start price, though the reluctance of its youth to pursue a army profession has additionally been cited as a cause.
