Neighborhood reacts to new Folly Seashore Pier on opening day

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCSC) – Lots of of group members visited the brand new, reconstructed Folly Seashore Pier on opening day and say they’re excited to get pleasure from the brand new pier.

Reopening months forward of schedule, the pier was closed to the general public on Oct. 19, 2020 and was anticipated to take 28 months to finish.

Measuring 1,049-foot-long, the Folly Seashore Pier is constructed with a picket walkway and railings built on concreate pilings and substructure. Mark Patrick, Charleston Nation Parks of Folly Seashore Normal Supervisor, says a very powerful component of the brand new pier is the concrete substructure that may make for an extended lifespan.

“The Folly Seashore Pier is sort of a Lowcountry iconic place to be, so being out right here and never having it for 2 years was fairly completely different; having it again open now, it’s fairly particular,” Patrick says.

Relationship again to the Thirties, many longtime residents of the Lowcountry have many reminiscences having fun with the pier. Celebrating their fifty fifth anniversary, Tommy and Dale Martin first began courting on the pier years in the past and visited on the reopening.

“It’s only a stronger bond and we recognize the time we spent right here years in the past. We have now been again through the years with our youngster and our buddies,” Tommy says. “It’s simply a part of you that’s what it’s. It’s Folly Seashore.”

The Martin’s reminisce on the pier, saying it was completely different then, being extra of a dancing spot and only a spot to collect with an amusement park, merry-go-round, and bowling alley.

“Even after I was a small youngster out right here, I got here out with my dad and mom and performed within the water, would get a raft and experience the waves, go the amusement park and get on the Farris Wheel, get our sweet apples and cotton sweet,” Dale remembers. “It has quite a lot of reminiscences.”

Now, the pier stands 22-feet above sea degree on 228 concrete pilings. Positioned on the finish of the pier, the Diamond Head platform is 7,500 sq. toes and consists of shade constructions, benches and extra seating.

One other longtime customer, Pat Brennan, now brings her grandchildren to the pier and has been wanting ahead to the reopening for 2 years.
