Brown & Brown completes hillside residence in Scottish nationwide park

Occupying the footprint of a ruined stone cottage that had been demolished earlier than buy by the house owners in 2018, the scheme has been designed to seem as a hillock, whereas framing views throughout two valleys and the River Don.

Spyon Cop includes a pitched roofline, angled to create a sweeping elevation upon method. A sod roof is planted with grass tussocks lower from the hillside and blankets the house to submerge it in its locale.

Every room’s sightlines have been directed to disclose valley vistas.

On entry, a Cor-ten vestibule conceals the utility and storage rooms. From this, an entrance corridor leads onto an open-plan kitchen and front room lined in an expanse of glazing opening onto the glen past.

The central open plan kitchen and front room is flanked to the east by the principle en suite bed room, whereas a household rest room, utility room and two bedrooms sit to the west. Views over the jap valley had been reserved for the principle bed room, which options an eye-level slot window within the bathe.

Internally, a minimal palette of supplies have been used to provide hierarchy to the encompassing panorama. A board-marked concrete wall provides texture to the residing and eating area, contrasting with the sleek end of its micro-cement flooring.

The micro-cement continues onto the kitchen’s monolithic island bench and splashbacks, in addition to the wall skirtings and within the moist rooms. A customized plywood kitchen matches the inner doorways and eating room’s storage bench.

Trickle vents are positioned within the partitions reasonably than the home windows to accommodate slender window frames, whereas home windows open at strategic factors to naturally cross-ventilate the home.

The first cladding is black-painted larch with moments of unpainted timber to mix the home into the panorama. The entry vestibule is clad in Cor-ten metal, taking its tones from the encompassing hills.

Architect’s view

From the outset, we needed to design a constructing that sat delicately within the panorama and didn’t disrupt the horizon line. The end result for Spyon Cop is an easy design, whereby every little thing springs from the identical end and is intentionally restricted, permitting the views to take priority. The problem with constructing in these circumstances is designing one thing that matches harmoniously with the rugged panorama. Spyon Cop marries the modern retreat our purchasers needed, with a house that appears to have grown from the hillside.

Shopper’s view

Being perched on the hilltop at Spyon Cop is like nothing else; my favorite expertise of the home is sitting in my Ercol chair or – in good climate – out on the deck, espresso in hand, watching the solar rise over the valley.

We had been very acutely aware when constructing that this was to be our vacation residence, and had been decided to not take housing inventory out of the native space. Working with an area structure agency, with native builders and so far as attainable native suppliers and craftspeople, we’ve got been in a position to realise our dream, to construct a home that makes the perfect use of the land and views, and does so gently, and quietly, providing a spot we’re at peace in.
