Conservative group will get extra time to assessment books for two new Polk colleges

Bowing to neighborhood teams, the Polk County College Board determined to delay the method for putting 34,000 books on the library cabinets at two new colleges – a transfer that might delay the processing of the books in time for subsequent yr college yr.

The delay is the newest in an ongoing assessment of faculty library books by conservative teams that deem them inappropriate for varsity age youngsters.

The delay was requested by College Board member Lori Cunningham on the panel’s Dec. 6 work session. Then on the board’s commonly scheduled assembly later that night, a movement by Board member William Allen to approve the acquisition of the books died earlier than it might be voted on, as none of his 4 colleagues seconded the movement.

Board members Lisa Miller and Kay Fields weren’t current at both assembly. The board was set to approve or reject library collections for Scenic Terrace Ok-8 and Elementary 21-C. These colleges are below development and are anticipated to be accomplished earlier than subsequent college yr.

A new elementary school, known only as C-21, is under construction on State Road 653 between Winter Haven and Lake Wales. The school district has delayed the adoption of its library materials at the request of a conservative group that challenged 16 books across Polk County last year.

“I’ve acquired a number of neighborhood emails requesting that (the guide procurement) be tabled till the January assembly to offer the neighborhood time to assessment the books which can be within the library – being offered to be a part of our library system,” stated Cunningham, the District 2 consultant.

“So I wasn’t certain if that’s one thing that employees may wait a month. If they may, it will be vastly appreciated,” Cunningham stated.
