‘Artivista’ and MacArthur Winner Martha Gonzalez on Attaining Social Justice By way of Music

2022 MacArthur fellow Martha Gonzalez describes herself as an ‘artivista’ – without delay an artist and an activist. The frontwoman of the East Los Angeles band Quetzal, Gonzalez focuses on the methods communities of shade use music and artistic expression as political instruments towards social justice. From group fandango workshops to recording tasks between girls in L.A. and Veracruz, Mexico, Gonzalez makes music a conduit for dialog centering communities and their challenges.
