Woman Sends ‘Cake Resume’ To Nike

If you want a job, better make your resume stand out That’s a common saying among people who are looking for jobs. People can sometimes also go all out in order to land their dream job and to get noticed at their dream company.

Mailing resumes is a common practice but imagine sending an edible resume printed on a cake to the company. That has got to leave a sweet (pun intended) mark on the recruiter. You are in for a treat because a woman did just that.

LinkedIn user Karly Pavlinac Blackburn revealed in a long post that she sent a resume printed on a cake to Nike to apply for a job.

In a long post, she informed, “A couple of weeks ago I sent my resume on a cake to Nike. Yes, an edible resume on top of a cake. Nike was having a huge celebration for JDI day (Just Do It day). LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick + Other Megastars were at the event. I had done some research and found a division within Nike called Valiant Labs which is a startup incubator for Nike ideas.”

The woman did that on a friend’s suggestion who told her, “Karly do better, this is a creative place, show up in a creative way!” And she decided to get her resume printed on a cake after brainstorming and looking at grocery store cakes with pictures printed on them.

She didn’t get the job but won the internet

To deliver the cake, the woman choose a delivery service called Instacart where a woman called Denise delivered her cake. The delivery agent later told Karly that she inspired her. In the same post, she quoted the delivery agent and wrote, “You have inspired me. This was meant to be. I am a mom and I am tired of doing Instacart. I know I have more abilities and qualifications to get something better. I’m so glad this worked for the both of us.”

Here’s what people had to say:

Appreciating Karly for taking the risk, some netizens praised her. A user wrote, “Love this Karly, looks great – let’s hope they don’t eat all of your experiences.” Another wrote, “Great idea & effort! Well if the recruitment systems weren’t so broken, people wouldn’t be left to such creative (and maybe desperate) efforts to get noticed in their job search.”

But not everyone was happy with the stunt. One unimpressed user pointed out, “This is a terrible gimmick. Props if it actually works, but the cake was almost certainly thrown away unceremoniously because people don’t just accept food from strangers at a large corporation.” Another added, “This is an awful approach and you will not get a job at Nike. And there is no way I would hire anyone with an inappropriate gimmick like this. In fact, I would question your judgement.”
