Maine’s humid summer season pressured a small library to dump 1000’s of books


Constructed within the late 1800s, the Buck Memorial Library has been giving the individuals of Bucksport one thing to learn for almost 150 years. Earlier this summer season, although, it needed to decommission some books — for good.

About six weeks in the past, Library Director Lisa Ladd discovered a mould infestation that broken almost 15 p.c of the 14,000 books lining the nonprofit’s stacks. She was pressured to chuck all of them.

“Mildew is a librarian’s worst nightmare, as it could actually unfold quickly, infecting a complete assortment,” the library informed patrons final month. “The one solution to stop the lack of your assortment is to cull the volumes out of your library.”
